🇲🇹 Malta digital nomad visa: requirements
Last checked: September 2026 · official government source
Malta's Nomad Residence Permit is the English-speaking option in the Mediterranean, and its flat 10% tax on remote-work income is the most explicit tax deal in this comparison. The income bar sits mid-table. The insurance requirement, however, is the toughest on this site after Spain's — and unlike Spain's, it catches people out precisely because Malta otherwise looks easy.
Income: ~€3,500/month · Insurance: required · Duration: 1 year, renewable up to three times — four years in total
⚠️ This is general information, not legal, immigration, tax or insurance advice. Rules change often — always confirm the current requirements with the official government source before you apply.
Income requirement
You need to show roughly €3,500 per month. A minimum gross annual income of €42,000, which works out at €3,500/month. The threshold rose from €32,400 on 1 April 2024, and anyone who applied before that date keeps the old figure — which is why you still see €32,400 quoted. You have to evidence the income for at least five cumulative months from the day you apply.

Health insurance
Health insurance with at least €100,000 of cover across the EU and the UK, meeting Residency Malta's published Table of Minimum Benefits, pre-paid for one full year and covering every dependant in Malta. This is the step that rejects the most applications, so it's worth getting right.

Tax
A flat 10% tax applies to qualifying remote-work income for permit holders who become Maltese tax residents — one of the few nomad schemes with a purpose-built rate rather than an exemption.
How long it lasts
1 year, renewable up to three times — four years in total. It is mainly a temporary route rather than a path to permanent residency.
Getting paid and staying connected
Two practical things every nomad sorts out on arrival: a low-fee way to receive income in euros, and mobile data from day one.
