🇵🇹 Portugal digital nomad visa: requirements

Portugal's D8 is widely seen as the gold-standard European nomad route: clear rules, a real path to residency and eventually citizenship, and access to the rest of the EU. It is the visa most people compare everything else against. Note that the income bar is tied to the minimum wage and has been rising every January — many older guides still quote figures that are hundreds of euros too low.

Income requirement
You need to show roughly €3,680 per month. Four times the Portuguese minimum wage. The 2026 minimum wage is €920/month, which puts the bar at €3,680/month — up sharply from previous years, since the minimum wage rises annually. You also need savings of about €11,040 (12× minimum wage) in the bank. Add 50% of the minimum wage for a spouse (~€460) and 30% (~€276) per child.

Health insurance
Private health insurance valid in Portugal for the full stay, typically with at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation coverage. This is the step that rejects the most applications, so it's worth getting right.

Tax
After becoming tax resident you may qualify for incentive regimes; rules changed recently, so confirm the current scheme before relying on it.
